Electrical compliance is an area that businesses often overlook, until something goes wrong. For business owners, the day to day demands of running a business doesn't leave much time to focus on the condition of your electrical installation or whether it meets regulatory requirements. At the same time, non-compliance can result in fines, enforcement action and in serious cases, the loss of life.
The best place to start is with an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This is an inspection and testing of the electrical installation within your property and it must be carried out by a qualified electrician. The EICR assesses all aspects of your electrical installation from the consumer unit and wiring to the sockets and switches, along with any associated electrical components.
During the assessment, any defects are identifies, including deterioration or non-compliances, they are then graded based on severity. Commercial EICRs should be carried out at least every five years, though high-risk environments do require more frequent inspection.
In addition the commercial EICR, businesses also have an obligation to ensure any portable appliances are safe for use. This involves a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) certificate. These are electrical appliances used in your workspace and can be anything from computers and monitors to extension leads, microwaves, and kettles. These appliances must be maintained in a safe condition at all times. PAT testing is the recognised way to show that your obligations are being met.
It is important to note that there is no legal requirement on how often PAT testing should be carried out, but the Health and Safety Executive does recommend carrying out PAT testing based on risk with higher risk environments testing more often.
As a business owner, it is also your responsibility to ensure your fire alarms and emergency lighting installation is tested regularly and maintained to achieve compliance with British Standards. Having these systems installed is not enough, they need regular testing and servicing, along with keeping detailed records of any activity.
